“Design is so simple, and that’s why its complicated”
Paul Rand
This week I have faced one of my biggest design challenges yet. I had to create this logo for a new Barber Shop coming into town. The client initially went somewhere to get a logo created and they liked the final product, but unfortunately didn’t love it. As this new client stumbled on the door step I was quite nervous. The previous logo designed for them was a good and used a lot of detail. However, the client felt like something was lacking. They had this vintage vision engraved in their mind– which to be completely honest is not my strongest area of design. I typically keep a clean and minimal style to my artwork. I feature a lot of sans-serif fonts and clean designs. With this challenge in front of me I began my steps of creating a brand.
I actually started by researching. I knew NOTHING about barber shops, let alone anything about how to design a logo for a VINTAGE barber shop. With some research, I was able to create this really amazing piece. To be honest it turned out to be my favorite logo I have created. I offered the client three options. All very different. The customer ended up picking the one I was excited about, but was not my top pick. *SIDE NOTE* Never show a client a design you do not like and or love, because I PROMISE you that is the one they will pick EVERY TIME.
Compared to the original logo the client walked in with, mine seemed very minimal. My biggest challenge was not over detailing, thinking and designing. Sometimes the best pieces are the simplest answers. Next time you are designing, take a step back. and break the idea to the rawest form. Who knows, it may end up being your best work yet.
