Tale of Light and Shadow Comic

Hello!

So this week I have something a bit different to share. In my illustration class we worked on a comic for several weeks and its finally finished so I thought I share the process with you.

We started off with creating the characters, wanting them to follow the archetypes of a protagonist, antagonist, and sidekick.

The two main characters I came up with were Lucy and Griffin. Two siblings who have been separated, pulled apart, and put on opposing sides of a war between a corrupt government and a rebellion in their city. Lucy has the power to manipulate light and energy, and Griffin has the power to manipulate darkness and shadows. For the “sidekick” I came up with Jade, who is more of a partner to Griffin as they lead the rebellion. She has the power to manipulate blood but only uses it under dire circumstances because she she’s scared of it and feels that its unnatural.

Here are some sketches and the character sheets that I drew up for them. The purpose of the sheets was for me to get a chance to develop and get familiar with the characters. Developing their personalities through expressions and poses.

After that we created an environment for them my characters spend most of their time in the city, so I drew an alleyway and set the characters in it. I wanted to experiment with what a fight would like like between the siblings, so I picked dynamic poses and fluid shapes to create a sense of movement within the drawing.

Finally we arrived at the actual comic. We were tasked with creating 2-3 pages from the story we developed and come up with a cover for the comic as well. I was really happy with how it came out, I decided on a scene where the Protagonist Griffin attempts to persuade Lucy to switch sides. But it all goes horribly wrong as Lucy ends up losing control of her emotions and powers and ends up striking Griffin. Then its up to Jade to save him as he loses consciousness, and after pulling him out of the water she’s able to use her powers to heal him.

For the cover I wanted to create an illustration that revolved around the conflict between Lucy and Griffin. So I chose a dramatic scene where the two siblings are about to fight, but when you look closely in the water the reflections show a scene from when they were little. Running to each other in happiness and not contempt or anger. I liked the idea of using this juxtaposition of scenes to draw out emotion and interest in a reader.

Overall I really loved this project, I especially loved getting to explore the characters personalities and stories.

Thank you for reading!
