The Gaslight District

The Gaslight District is a supernatural crime series that recently had its pilot released on YouTube! This pilot is an extraordinarily amazing look into the mind of creator Nick Szopko. The pilot was produced and released by Glitch Productions. As previously mentioned in The Knights of Guinevere article, this company brings indie-animated series to life, the most popular of which being The Amazing Digital Circus.

To provide some background, The Gaslight District takes place after humanity (known here as “Rotlings”), by their own arrogance, have been twisted into an immortal form. Their relatively peaceful chaos is threatened by a prophecy of a human being born from an angel’s egg. The way to identify this human is through their black-colored blood (the other characters have purple blood).

That is when we quickly discover that our main protagonist, Melancholy “Mel” Hill is THAT human. Although she is just as wicked as the Rotlings, her true identify can’t be found out. Otherwise, she’ll be killed. She is protected by her father, Ken the Butcher, who goes out of his way to kill anyone who discovers Mel’s secret. Ken, as the leader of The Smiling Dead (mafia organization), has his family members, Mud and BreadHead, assist his their take-downs and tag along for all the mischievous fun in the gaslight district.

That is an extremely simplified synopsis of the basic concept behind this pilot. However, it is expanded on so much further in a super fun and dramatic adventure! I’m not usually a massive fan of indie-animated series. Popular ones such as Hazbin Hotel or The Amazing Digital Circus, although impressive, don’t personally speak to my interests or humor. The Gaslight District on the other hand, is so well crafted and suspenseful I actually found myself crashing out everytime YouTube gave me an ad.

I think it’s important to note why I mention indie-animation so much. Even if I’m not a massive fan of some shows, it is so so so important for re-establishing creativity within productions. It is sickening to see constant remakes, remasters, sequels, so on and so forth to media we have already experienced. It’s a cheap cash grab from desperate companies who usually fail to capture the magic that came with the creativity of the original. Whether it be disney remaking classic films, remakes of old cartoons where all the characters are washed of what made them special. It’s frustrating seeing this constant pumping out of genuine slop. It warms my heart to see productions from people who really REALLY care about what they make. People who are passionate and aren’t being puppeted by corporations.

So if you get a chance, check out The Gaslight District on YouTube and help further support this amazing pilot and have an outstanding twenty-six minutes and fifty-four seconds of bliss.
