The Haitian Mermaid: La Siren

Hello! It’s Sephora and for one last time, I will share a piece that I am thrilled I finally finished!

I had started it around the beginning of my Fall semester last year but stopped when I realized I wasn’t too thrilled with the colors. But after looking at some old artwork it made me realize how far I’ve come and how much I wanted to keep improving. My biggest goal with my art is to finish projects and see them through! So I’m currently trying to finish all of my half-done projects by 2025!

But let’s take a look at the piece!

La Siren

La Siren is a part of Haitian folklore and is a Haitian voodoo spirit, this piece is more inspired than supposed to directly be about her. She leans more towards Ariel from The Little Mermaid, which I think might be subconscious…

My initial issues with the piece came from how I had originally colored it, they were muddy, desaturated, and didn’t go well together. But after playing around with the brushes and colors on procreate I found a coloring style and palette that I liked! This piece is much more vibrant and I’m extremely proud of it!

Here’s a speedpaint so you can see the progression into the current piece!

As I said earlier, this will be my last post as a blogger for Where Creativity Works! I had SO much fun learning and talking to my classmates and sharing my art (finished or unfinished) with you all! If you are an artist of any sort please keep doing what you love and if you are someone who enjoys looking at art, please keep supporting us and our work!

To the next blogger, Conchita, who will take over Student Spotlight, I hope you have just as much fun as I did!

Sephora, For the last time, Out <3
