Hello, in my most recent post “Art of Originality” I discussed the beauty of creating something new. Nonetheless, there is also an art in taking something that was already created and recreating it into something new!

What is Recreation:

Recreation is not a direct copy of an original work. Instead it is taking that original work and making something creatively unique. Oftentimes, recreation is seen in fan art. When someone takes a character and creates his or her own fan art it is, in fact, a recreation.

Another common example of recreations is making licensed products of a popular IP (Intellectual Property). For instance, The franchise Five Nights at Freddy’s (FNAF) has an ever-expanding line of merchandise. All the merchandise is considered an artistic recreation. Taking the characters from FNAF and incorporating them into original designs is an artistic skill that someone needs to possess. If the recreations fail to succeed or are undesirable, then the merch would not sell. Examples of some of the most popular FNAF recreated merchandise include: plushies, action figures, t-shirts, hats, and jewelry.

Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride “Emily” Recreation:

Most recently, I had the opportunity to purchase the life-size Emily animatronic from Spirit Halloween for the 2024 season. Emily is an officially licensed character from Tim Burton’s film Corpse Bride. Anyways in case you are not familiar, Corpse Bride is film created entirely in stop-motion. That being said, replicating any of the characters into a full-scale, functional animatronic would be no easy creative task. Spirit Halloween and the animatronic manufacturer YJ were up for the challenge, and they did not disappoint!

WRAP-UP:

Overall, creatively and artistic ability is vital in creating successful recreations. Moreover, recreations are important as it allows for enjoyments of original ideas in more ways than one!
