So if there are any soccer fans around, please raise your hand because one of the most anticipated events is back after 4 years. The FIFA World Cup is a major soccer event that happens every 4 years, and each country all around the world competes to be the best one globally. Now I know everyone has their own favorite country, and you are welcome to comment on them below. I wanted to talk about the newest mascots presented for the 2026 World Cup!
Now, to start, FIFA created its first mascot back in 1966, a lion named Willie! His design was very sharp considering his edges, and since he was the first one, it wasn’t that big of a deal design-wise. Nonetheless, his jersey represented the hosts of the World Cup that year, and it became a trend that FIFA followed for many years going forward.
Now, my favorite FIFA mascot was when I watched my very first World Cup back in 2014, and his name was Fuleco. According to FIFA itself, they were inspired by the first Brazilian three-banded armadillo. They were very clear about how they wanted him to look like the bright skies of Brazil, and they really blended those colors well to give him a very vibrant design that we all love. I also had a doll of him when I was a kid. I just gotta find it somewhere hehe.
Now, for this year’s mascots, FIFA incorporated a trio of mascots rather than just one, and it was not their first time incorporating more than one mascot into the World Cup. They have done it before with Korea/Japan in 2002, they called them Ato, Kaz, and Nik. Now they are introducing a new trio who are Maple the Moose for Canada, Zayu the Jaguar for Mexico, and Clutch the bald eagle for the United States. There has been a lot of criticism for their designs, considering they don’t give off “World Cup” vibes, but in my opinion, I like how each design is meant to incorporate a part of the country where each is from. Making them a trio was no accident either, considering Canada, Mexico, and the U.S are hosting this year’s World Cup.
I cannot wait to see more mascots designs in the future, who is your favorite? For now that is all for today, stay tuned for more!
