I came cross a Titian painting in a book the other day that I found interesting. The painting is titled The Allegory of Marchese del Vasto and the image in the book was very different from the original. The painting appeared to be much darker overall and the colors are pretty far off from the original painting. Although this is true I decided to paint the version from the book. I thought it would be interesting to do a study of this piece with the same composition as the original while changing the colors and overall tone of the painting at my own discretion. The painting is still in progress but it is coming along great. I try to work on it a little bit everyday after work.
The first image is the one in my book and the second is the image from Artstor. It really is amazing how much of a difference there is between the two! It’s always good to double check an image you find in a book; on Artstor because most of their images are reliable.
I plan to continue to make the shadows a red color to enhance the warm tones. Titian’s original colors are much cooler. It would be interesting to paint this same composition again with the same colors he had used. It is good to study one painting more than once in different ways because you can learn more from it.
