Comic Antagonists And Art Process

Hello!

Though summer has begun, unfortunately I have not gotten around to doing environmental design concept drawings for my comic yet, but I do have something that is way more fun: the antagonists of the comic!

I love, love, love media that personifies the seven deadly sins and uses them as the antagonists, so I of course had to use them in my comic.

So far I’ve only completed Gluttony and will be sketching/finishing the others by the end of May.

A bit about the characters:

  • Lust loves to read and constantly seeks out knowledge
  • Greed is able to transform part of her body into that of any creature she’s eaten. This transformation lasts for 24 hours.
  • Sloth has full control over her hair and loves to use it as a pillow.
  • Gluttony is the first one I finished and is going to be the main topic of this post!

When working on the design for Gluttony, I wanted to convey with her pose that she is very playful and give a first impression that she isn’t all too harmful (unless you end up annoying her.) She eats almost everything organic around her, often leaving some spots in nature to lose their nutrition and die out.

My whole digital art process is pretty straight forward where all my pieces start with:

Sketch->Lineart->Gray base->flat colors->shading.

I love designing characters with multiple mouths, so I had a lot of fun working on her. The main mouth she uses to eat surrounding terrain isn’t the one on her face, but the one at the end of her hair. That mouth’s name is Gekko. Gekko is able to move independently of Gluttony, often leading to him eating something when she’s not looking

Gluttony also has two mouths on her palms that, when put together, creates a mini black hole. This is something she rarely does as every second it’s used takes a year away from her lifespan.

When it comes to designing the other characters, Pride, Envy, and Wrath, I have a general idea in mind for them.

Pride is going to be a wealthy woman trying to blend into society, Envy will have the ability to steal life from others and add it to his own, and Wrath is going to be an old man who wields a great-sword. My biggest struggle will likely be Envy and trying to create a design that conveys his sin.

Do you like designing characters? What’s your favorite part of the process?

Thanks for reading!
