A Father’s Passions

I know this post will be up about a week after Fathers Day but I still wanted to wish all those who fulfill the father role a Happy Fathers Day. This is a piece I had made for my dad for fathers day. My father is a massive Star Wars fan and his absolute favorite character is Darth Maul. My dad has always really liked the art that I make and he often requests for me to make different things for him. I’ve always really enjoyed making things for people whether its a specific request or a surprise. This specific piece was a surprise and I’m very happy with how it came out.

Darth Maul Face

My dad has absolutely loved Star Wars ever since he was a kid when the original series came out. My brothers and I often watched the originals and prequels growing up. Our household has always been a very nerdy one and we all really love these movies. Though none of us can stand the new stuff we love re-watching the original and prequel series. We all know that my dads favorite character is Darth Maul and I know my mind instantly goes to my dad whenever I see anything Darth Maul related. Because of this I thought it was no brainer for me to make this piece for him for Fathers Day. I’ve always taken an interest in what those I care about are passionate about and try to use their passions to make things they love.

To make this piece I got some air dry clay and the circular piece of wood from Michaels. I spent a few hours one night making the Darth Maul face and then let it dry for about 24 hours. Often it had dried I painted it using acrylic paint and let that dry for about 24 hours. Then a used both gorilla and krazy glue to attach the face to the piece of wood. Once the glue dried I painted a little bit of the wood around the face. Once that was completely dry I sprayed the entire thing with a finisher/sealant so that it could be hung up outside if my dad wanted to hang it on our backyard bar. I was able to complete this project in about 3-4 days taking a few hours each day to work on it after finishing my shift at work.

My dad really loved it and decided it was too nice to hang outside so he was going to to hang it in his office. I’m really happy with how it came out and definitely want to make more pieces like this. Again I would like to wish all those who fulfill the father role a very Happy Fathers Day!
