A Home Away from Home

Since day one we have walked this journey together. I’ve given you all a glimpse into my life at home in the Virgin Islands. I’d like to think I’ve made a home away from home here at Marywood University and if you will, join me so that we can continue on this journey.

I would like to take you all to the first place on campus where I felt completely at ease; the Office of Diversity Efforts on the second floor of the Liberal Arts Center. When I first walked into the office, I was greeted with warm smiles and pleasant hellos. There were a group of students just sitting enjoying each other’s company. The first person I actually met was Dr. Lia Richards Palmiter, the director of Diversity Efforts. She has held that position for the past 15 years. Through her work the office of diversity efforts is a place where students of various cultures, races, and religions can help to promote an appreciation of the diversity that we have here on campus. Lia has been with me since the start and now she’s like a second mom. I’ve spent countless hours in that office, either working on projects or spending time with the awesome people that I’ve been able to meet.

Through the Diversity Office I was introduced to the Diversity Club, where I held the position of President for about two years. As a club we host a number of events each year to celebrate diversity and raise awareness of issues that diverse students face on a daily basis. I was also introduced to the Step Team, which  I’ve been a member of for 4 years now. We perform at a variety of events on and off campus showcasing a cultural dance form with a modern spin.
I encourage all students to visit this office at least once during your time here at Marywood. I don’t think you’ll regret it! This office has been a home away from home for me for the last 4 years. I think it’s safe to say that it has helped to shape my experience here at Marywood in a special way. I can’t help but think many of my experiences may have never happened had I not walked through those doors. It’s a great place with great people! Stop by some time.
