There is always a lot that goes on behind the scenes to ensure that an event runs smoothly, and we have those people with arts administration degrees to thank for that. This week’s alum works for the amazing Museum of Modern Art! As a Guest Assistant at MoMA, she helps people create a better understanding and experience of the art surrounding them. Below alum Kristen describes how her education at Marywood helped her succeed in such a cool job.

KRISTEN DRAEGER

Graduation Year/Major: Class of 2015, Arts Administration and Art History, Communications minor

Marywood Clubs/Activities: Zeta Phi Delta, Zeta Omicron (Art Fraternity), Campus Ministry

Current Occupation: I’m a Guest Assistant at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC

1) What was your favorite part about Marywood?

The art department and the wonderful lifelong friendships I made, especially through Zeta Phi Delta. I have a few Marywood art department friends who are also working in the city and it has made the adjustment into the post-grad world such an exciting adventure!

2) Any advice for current art students at Marywood?

Seize every opportunity that comes your way, challenge yourself, and talk to your professors about your goals. Go to galleries, art shows, and museums as much as possible. It’s so inspiring and refreshing even if you aren’t in a major with a significant studio component. I went to a lot of First Fridays in Scranton with some friends in the art department and it always reminded me of why I chose to go into this field in the first place.

3) How did your art education at Marywood help your career?

Since Marywood is a smaller school in general and the Arts Administration program is small too, my professors and advisors were able to give me so much of their time and assistance. My art professors helped me tremendously in customizing my Marywood experience to focus on my specific career goals. There are so many incredible experiences I have had thanks to the faculty and staff of the art department.

4) What is your favorite part about your job?

There are so many things I love about my job! I think the top two for me would be 1) helping people have a positive and dynamic experience with art, and 2) learning how a world renowned art museum functions.

5) What is your main focus of being an Art Administration major?

My long-term goal is to become a curator, but I am in no rush. I am currently trying to gain as much experience as I can in different aspects of museums to have a broader perspective and a greater understanding of curating from the inside out.

6) What is your favorite exhibit at MoMA, either from the past or present?

Currently, my favorite exhibit is Joaquin Torres-Garcia: The Arcadian Modern. It’s such an extensive show, I keep revisiting it. He is a Uruguayan artist who explored a variety of different avant-garde movements in the 19th century, particularly Constructivism. I did not know very much about Torres-Garcia prior to this show so it was a wonderful surprise.
