Back To The Basics

Hard to believe I am already 3 weeks into my fourth semester as an Illustration Major at Marywood University in the Marywood University Art Department. That said, I have taken a variety of classes that expanded my creative horizons, such as: Painting, General Illustration, Graphic Design, etc. Nonetheless, this semester I am returning to my roots of pencil and charcoal drawing in my spring Drawing I class.

The Routes of My Artwork:

Prior to college my main form of media was pencil and charcoal. My high-school had both readily available and these were the primary mediums that we utilized while in class. Furthermore, they were the mediums that I was most comfortable with. I had the ability to erase mistakes, and values could be added easily with a simple color palette. Nonetheless, as I continued to develop my creativity as an artist I became more comfortable with working digitally–now this is my primary medium that create in.

Drawing I Class:

With the start of my Drawing I class this Spring 2025 semester, I am excited to have the opportunity to go back to the simple medium of pencil and/or charcoal. So far, working with these mediums again brought me back both emotionally and mentally to a simpler time in my life. Moreover, with pencils and charcoal, I am able to focus and enhance my abilities to identify obvious and sudden value changed and how to illustrate them in my work without the added worry of color.

WRAP UP:

Overall, despite expanding my creative horizons in new forms of media both traditionally and digitally, I will always cease the opportunity to dive back into my routes as an artist in the traditional pencil & charcoal medium.
