Basic Drawing

Basic Drawing might be my favorite studio class this semester. Even though its structure is the same as my Painting II course (still life work) it’s much more relaxing. I even enjoy the homework assignments for this course, I’ll take any excuse to draw things with pencil or charcoal and not oil paint.

I haven’t had as much time to work on my own projects and work, I’m on my very last piece for my exhibition however! But I’m still not spending as much time on my own pieces as I used to. So getting to draw with pencil or charcoal (and sit down while doing it) is the part of my day I always look forward to the most now.

Right now we’re working on hatching and cross-hatching, admittedly I am not a fan of “slowing down” to make a mark. But I did really want to try and do that for our homework assignment this week. The assignment was to draw a shoe. I have never had so much fun trying to come up with compositions for a shoe before this. I don’t hate drawing shoes but it’s just not something I do too much.

For this assignment I really wanted to do two things:

  1. Actually take my time with hatching and cross-hatching
  2. Cool composition

And I think my homework came out meeting that criteria, I definitely sped up nearing the end of working on this and you can tell. But overall I really love how it came out! All that being said, I can’t see myself using these techniques with my own work in this exact way, but I am going to try to incorporate them more in my course work.

I hope everyone is having a great semester and is enjoying the last of the warm weather!
