Hello! Thank you for coming back to the update for my last post! I remember talking about making 3D art for the illustration class project. Well, you probably are aware of the current stressful situation with finals; thus, I will keep this a short update for the model.
I have always loved baroque sculptures; they are dynamic, life-like, dramatic, and detailed. This is the goal that I have been trying to reach thus far. I haven’t quite gotten there, but I guess it is good to say that I’m on my journey to create the type of 3D illustration that has always sparked that excitement and inspiration within me.
I couldn’t find a cluck of marble to carve in, so I settled with paper and other little trash I had lying around instead. Literally, I used (clean)trash bags to make the bottom of the figure’s skirt. Perhaps from the chaos of finals, my brain cells decided to give up and not follow my original sketch for the amusement ride. So I just went at it with a questionable cut out from the cardboard and, from there, added and took away papers and foil. I blasted my music and imagined myself to be an inspiring artist like the ones in movies who are so intensely focused on their work. Well, in my case, I did not know what I was doing. Either way, I ended up with a pile of paper, foil, and a trash bag, all mixed up and stuck with tape. At that point, I could start seeing my sculpture coming to plan.
I very much strayed away from my original design, but this chaotic way of making art was something I needed as a relief from the other finals. I had been so stressed that this felt like a way of letting go of each anxiousness little by little. It was a beautiful chaos in which I did not expect to find so much joy.
I approached the rest of it with paper mâché, using paper clay for some parts. I did about two layers of this, and tho it did not feel much study, I continued to apply fast-drying indoor joint compound to give it that plaster look. I used three coasts of it to be thick on it. Perfect for sanding it down to a smooth, detailed surface. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get it into the desired polished form due to time restrictions. However, I like the raw, textured surface in my model.
After applying a few layers of gesso, I now stand at the point of painting it all. I must say, I did not expect this to be the part I dreaded- but it just doesn’t feel right to add color to this! I hope this “ugly” phase will soon end, and I can be left with a satisfying sculpture. Wish me luck finishing it soon- by that, I mean in less than 23 hours!
Thank you for reading!
