And so the adventure begins
One week into the summer and I’m already having such a blast. I took a trip down to Washington D.C. with my friend, Jade, this past week in hopes to see the Infinity Mirrors exhibit by Yayoi Kusama in the Hirshhorn Museum, but unfortunately came too late. Three days to be exact, the exhibit had just closed down and we had mixed up the dates! We still had a really great time checking out all the other exhibits there and made the most out of our trip.
I’ve been to the Hirshhorn a couple times prior, so I knew the first thing to do was to check out the area by the giftshop on the bottom floor. The walls are covered with sayings in black, red, and white, and it always makes for an awesome photo. As for the rest of the museum, all the art was so intriguing to look at and my favorite piece was definitely the one of a fish made out of wire and sea glass that hung over my head through one of the walkways. Creatively titled Fish, I was surprised to find out it was made back in 1944 by Alexander Calder who I knew was very famous for all of his stabile and mobile wire sculptures just like that one. I also was very drawn to a neon light piece called From Continent to Continent by Mario Merz. I really enjoyed it because you had to walk around the entire sculpture in order to read all the words, and of course my brilliant self ended up walking around it backwards the first time around very confused.
Although I didn’t get a chance to see the Infinity Mirrors, I did get to see another piece of Yayoi Kusama’s work. Outside, right next to the museum was one of her sculptures that correlated with her exhibition, and funny enough it also had a very straight to the point title, Pumpkin. There was other really neat sculptures laid out around the museum as well, so we spent an equal amount of time checking out the art inside and outside the Hirshhorn.
It was a very sunny day in D.C. and about 90 degrees out, so after checking out the museum we ended up treating ourselves to slushies and heading over to the fountain at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden as well. We dipped our toes in the water and made friends with a duck while sitting around and admiring all the cool sculptures around us. It was a great way to end my day, as I know this will be only one of the many visits I’ll take to Washington D.C. this summer.
