Empty Bowls is an event developed by Imagine/RENDER to “raise both money and awareness in the fight to end hunger,” and last year, Zeta Omicron, our Marywood chapter of Kappa Pi, National Art Honor Society, successfully held our first ever Empty Bowl sale to benefit a local hunger charity. On the First Friday of May 2015 in downtown Scranton, our organization came together to present two hundred handmade, ceramic bowls to the community for purchase, and were able to raise one thousand, eight hundred dollars for Meals on Wheels of Northeastern Pennsylvania. Because of the overwhelming support we received last year from our club members, faculty advisers, and members of the larger Scranton community, we have chosen to proceed with our second annual Empty Bowl event to be held on April 1, 2016. Check it out! (Shout out to fellow blogger Elizabeth for the advertisement design!)
Although it’s only our second year putting it on, this project has consistently proven to be far more work than I imagined. Firstly, considering we sold out within the first two hours of our event last year, our organization drove to surpass the number of bowls we produced previously. We now have approximately two hundred and seventy five bowls in the works that our members, faculty, and classmates spent long hours on. Between making the clay, throwing the bowls, cleaning each one of them up, loading the kilns, bisquing the bowls, mixing glazes, glazing the bowls, and loading and firing again, we had no choice but to dedicate most of our free moments between classes and reviews to bowls bowls bowls beginning in early February. And that doesn’t even take into consideration the planning of the event itself – reserving the venue, coming up with advertising materials, talking to the Wood Word and TV Marywood, getting on the First Friday map, distributing advertisements. Clearly the lists go on.
I have to give a huge thank you to our art faculty, particularly Matt Povse and Skip Sensbach for allowing us to use the Marywood facilities, providing the materials as well as a heck of a lot of guidance, and even some hand made bowls of their own. Scoopz Ice Cream in Olyphant, Pennsylvania has graciously donated ice cream to aptly accompany each bowl purchase free of charge, so they certainly deserve a great thank you. And a huge “hats off” to our Zeta Omicron, Kappa Pi members for all their dedication. We aren’t done yet, but there is at least light at the end of the tunnel.
And so we implore you, once again, to please join us on Friday, April 1st between 6-9pm for a display of beautifully hand crafted bowls for sale and an evening full of fun. We will be located at the same venue – The Launchpad – at 507 Linden Street in downtown Scranton. Help us help the hungry in our area! See you there.
