DIY Tank Tops

Before you know it summer will be here. So to celebrate I’m going to show you how to take those old t-shirts, that you don’t really wear and make them into something you will wear. It’s fast and easy plus there’s no sewing involved. All you need is a pair of scissors, chalk or pastels, and a t-shirt. Make sure the chalk or pastel you use is a light shade so that it washes out.

First lay your t-shirt out on the floor and make sure it’s not wrinkled. Now take your pastels and draw a line where you want to cut. This way you have a guide line and you can make sure it’s how you want it to look first. Before cutting remember that you might want to cut a little off at a time because there’s no going back. When looking at the front of the shirt your going to cut the sleeves and the collar off. You don’t have to cut the collar off if you like it as is.

Now you’re going to flip the shirt over so that the back of it is facing you. Your going to make half circles to give the shirt a racer back like a tank top. The less is more rule still applies here. If you want to cut of more you can.

Lastly, you’re going to take one of the sleeves that you cut off and cut it into a strip. I like to tie it around the racer back part but if you’re a guy you can keep it as is. Now if you look at the edges you cut they are a little ragged and that’s ok. Just stretch the fabric carefully and it will curl the edges to give it a smoother look.

This is a basic way to make a tank top. You can get fancy with it and add ribbons or whatever you’d like. There are different ways to cut the shirt to get a style of tank top that you’d like. Just have fun with it!
