Fingers Crossed!

As I have mentioned in many of my other blog posts, I find 2 dimensional work very difficult for me to do. My heart is definitely with 3 dimensional work, but right now I am combining both of them together! This summer I talked about working with line and I made different kinds of pictures with water color and ink over top. Right now I am trying to incorporate my line work with my ceramic pieces. I decided I wanted to make a set of plates this year in my ceramic class, but I did not want it to be so simple, because anyone could do that. I wanted to make them unique to me.

For my art therapy classes, we really focus on mandalas because they have a really relaxing property to making them. They are a really important part of art therapy. So I got the idea to create a dinnerware set, that when you look at them from above, look like a mandala when they are stacked together. The first plates I made all unfortunately cracked so I decided to take a different approach. Instead of throwing plates on the wheel, I am draping them on a mold. After I can get them off, that is when I can carve them and make the go together. They have taken a very long time, but I think I am finally satisfied with this last sample I have made. There is always room for improvement, but I think I am a good spot to start making more for so can accomplish a full set of 8 plates.IMG_8812.JPG
