Illustrating People

Hello, in this week’s blog I wanted to discuss how I am taking steps in furthering my artistic arsenal by stepping outside my usual illustration comfort zone.

Oftentimes, I would try to avoid drawing figures or humans as much as humanly possible (pun intended). I find humans particularly difficult to illustrate…especially hands. Furthermore, I always get nervous when illustrating human because, as humans, we are able to identify key characteristics in humans; therefore, if I have any details or proportions even slightly off it could completely alter the visual representation of my piece. That said, this spring 2025 semester, I have noticed that I am illustrating more humans than ever before!

At the start of the semester, I reflected on myself and my work. I concluded that I would never improve as an artist if I continue to playing in shallow water and never “dive into the deep end” with my artwork. I truly want to improve my ability with illustrating human; and what better opportunity than doing so with my illustration projects at Marywood University!
