Irish Art

Over spring break I will be going to Ireland with my travel writing class and for a project I have to research something of Irish culture so obviously I choose Irish art. Since Irish art is not that well documented and appreciate like Irish stories and dance, I bought a book on it instead as my primary resource.

I am specifically researching Irish Illuminated Manuscripts. I studied manuscripts before in art history 1 and 2 but havent since then. Right now I am researching the Illuminated Manuscripts from the Book of Durrow, Echternach Gospels, and of course the Book of Kells.

The Book of Kells dates back to the 8th century and is a supreme achievement of Irish Celtic art. It has strong and original design and had a range of intense colors throughout. Depending on how much solid information I can find on all of these books I might have my research project be the Book of Kells only.

Soon I will be in Ireland for spring break and will hopefully get to see some of these in person!
