Keeping a Sketchbook

I won’t lie to you, I’m not the best drawer. I mean, sure, I can draw, but my ideas always exceed my abilities and I often get frustrated with my lack of pencil talents. So, when I discovered the Graphic Design field, I was ecstatic. Somehow, drawing is easier for me on the computer. Then I was told to keep a sketchbook and the world came crashing down. I can’t properly express what I want to do via a pencil and paper! Besides, that’s not going to be my job so what does it matter?

It does matter.

Even if, like me, you are incapable of sketching out properly all the creative goodness that is going on in your head, it never hurts to just get an outline out on paper. As rough or precise as you want, it all helps with process. And process is golden because your clients (or professors) can see where your ideas sprouted from and how they’ve grown. I use my sketchbook now more than ever.

So, what about you? Do you sketch out your ideas on good old paper before jumping onto the computer?
