I started out the school year with two design classes, web design and Communication design, as well as one internship. In my communications class we are starting off with branding. First logos, then letterheads, then websites. We had to pick an already existing non-profit company that is local. I chose Pennridge FISH, the food pantry/ community center from my home town.

I definitely think I could improve upon this logo. I first broke the name down into its symbols. Pennridge, is the school district, where the mascot is a ram or a big ‘P.’ FISH stands for “fellowship in serving humanity”. For fellowship I thought of a group of people, and for serving I thought of the giving hand. I also wanted to stick with the preexisting symbols of a fish, and the cross, because I know that this is a core aspect of their identity.

My ideas start from left to right on this image. I began with what I thought was very ingenious, a letter P that also looks like a fish and the letter f, #10. It might be a little too abstract. Then I went on to the fish with scales that look like silhouette of people as scales, bringing in the fellowship aspect, in #9. I tried to add the cross on top of the little people/scales, in # 5 and 6. I then added the giving hand in one continuous line with the fish, like in #8. I think that was pretty successful, but the cross was not present. Next, I re-imagined the fish and cross combo, first doing it sideways like in #2 then vertical in #1. Those were both very solid. Then I went back to the #10 and added it to the phrase Pennridge Fish, in #3. My last design was going back to the letters and adding a cross and fish to the word FISH. #4 turned out interesting, the cross sits in the negative space between the F and I, while the S is made up of two fish with selective coloring.
Overall, the design evolved a lot in a couple different directions. I think the strongest and clearest one would probably be #1 ( I ranked them in order that I liked them), because of the simple line work and with its same symbols included. I am not sure which one/ ones I will go forward into vector with, we will see…
