Hello everyone! I hope we are all doing well and enjoying the semester. I have been working on a project for my sculpture class that I wanted to share. This project is meant to be a monument that commemorates one significant thing in our lives. It was to be composed out of only one material to show technical and sophisticated use of the material chosen.
I decided to compose a monument dedicated to women. I wanted to create an un-idealized woman, with curves and abstract shapes. I used two continuous strands of wire to create the entire form. I have found that there are not as many monuments in the world celebrating what women have done in comparison to monuments dedicated to men. Women have been fighting for basic civil rights since the dawn of time. I wanted to show, through an abstract form, the hardships and obstacles that are thrown at women to overcome. A woman endures far more than what meets the eye. There are constant internal battles being dealt with all the while reaming composed and professional.
There is a great quote by Maya Angelou that I believe fits wells with this work, “each time a woman stands up for herself, without knowing it possibly, without claiming it, she stands up for all women”. I believe now more than ever is a time for women to come together and support one another and continue to fight for our basic civil liberties. The people running this country need to not underestimate the power of a woman and all that she brings to the table.
I found this project to be a great outlet for me and creativity. It look me a few days to compose a lists of things in my life that I placed enough value on to create a monument of. I find that when I seek guidance on ways to be better, it is always the empowered women in my life who are able to ignite my spirits.
