My Peace

I’m back to talk about this cat again! It appears my last blog didn’t save properly and doesn’t have words, so if you want to read more about each image and my process, it has a lot more context now and is generally more fun than the gallery it was 🙂

In today’s episode, I’m going to talk about my method of painting the cat, my work on a concrete cast, as well as minor progress on an upcoming project.

Where I last left off, I had the piece demoulded and touched up. Once I’d carved out the plaster I didn’t want on the piece anymore, I started painting. I did a layer of white paint first. Although the plaster is white, I wanted to make sure none of it was left exposed as it isn’t super sturdy. It also served as a sort of primer layer to give a good surface for my black to go onto.

After this, I started adding the black paint. I added a bit of paint to the eyes as well, but at this stage, they just looked really uncanny.

Next, I started to hone in on the face and particular markings she has. The eyes were still looking uncanny (left), but with the addition of pupils (right), it began to look more and more like my cat.

From there, I added a little pink on her nose, and then added the final touch: nail polish top coat on her eyes! It just adds that glossy shine without needing to use any kind of resin, and it helped bring the sculpture to life.

Now that it was done, it was time to see what the muse herself thought about the piece. Although it was difficult to get her to care, as she had been sharing the room with the sculpture for the past few weeks, with the help of some treats, we were able to see her opinion.

So, now that the piece was done, it was suggested I put it on a pedestal nice and advertise, so I did! If anyone is interested in purchasing a custom painted cat, or a plain, unpainted cat, contact me! (unicorngirl51405@gmail.com) I will also be selling things at the CMYKlub craft fair this Monday in upper Naz, if anyone is interested, stop by!

It honestly doesn’t look as cool from above level with your eyes, as the idea is that the sculpture is looking up at you from a lower level, but I’m still quite happy with it.

I did just cast another cat sculpture, this time in concrete. It needs to be sanded down, which will be my job this week. The fun bit is that I actually added beads for the eyes. They were meant to be oriented to look like cat eyes, but it was hard to see inside the mould, so I might have to make modifications.

The last thing I want to share is a little sneak peek of a heron piece I’ll be working on. Although it seems unlikely it’ll be finished this semester, I’ll give updates to any progress I make with it, and I’ll be working on it diligently next semester.

That’ll be all for this week, more to come!
