Out of the Box

For my Graphic Design II class, we’re currently working on posters for the 2017 Typography Day convention. The only guidelines we were given were the main theme, Diversity and Typography, and size constraints, but everything else was free reign.

Knowing that I had no major rules to follow made it really difficult to come up with new ideas. After many classes dedicated to working on this project, and a lot of my free time questioning my work, I finally decided to throw caution to the wind and just… create something.

That might sound a little strange but when you’re so used to working with a lot of guidelines, it’s hard to break out of that box. I just grabbed a pen and a piece of paper and started drawing with no real plan. I ended up creating something that I really loved, and felt reflected the given theme. It’s something that I wouldn’t have come up with if I just stuck to my usual routine, and I’m excited to see how I can push more projects further. It can be extremely difficult to stray away, and create something totally different, but it’s really exciting to make something new that you didn’t originally plan on.
