Spoon Experiments

I not only love making ceramics, but I love looking at what other ceramic artists make as well. With that being said, I follow a large amount of ceramic artists on social media, specifically on Instagram.

More and more frequently I’ve been seeing people create ceramic spoons! I have always been one to be more concerned about making functional pieces as opposed to decorative, so these immediately intrigued me! There seems to be many different ways to make spoons out of clay, a lot of them are very oriented with hand building. But, low and behold, I found some spoons that were made out of different pieces that were thrown on the wheel! I’ve been looking at different kinds of these ceramic spoons, and I’m in the process of trying to come up with a plan to make some! I think I’ll attempt to make some of these in class this week! I think I would start with throwing a closed cylindrical shape, and play with the form. This would then be the handle. Then I would throw a closed ball, and cut it in half in order to make the scoop part of the spoon. I’ll let you guys know how this works out!

In the meantime, here are a few that inspired me. What do you think?
