Hey everyone! I hope you all have been well. I can’t believe that it’s already August, and we’re approaching the start of the fall 2026 semester. Although the free time and relaxation have been amazing, I’m kind of ready to get back to campus life. This week, I started a new project I wanted to share with you guys, and I think you’ll enjoy it. However, it isn’t another drawing or painting.
Over the past couple of years, I have been learning to crochet and making all sorts of creations, from plushies to book covers. I haven’t been able to crochet in a minute, so I decided that the summer is the perfect time to get back into it. As I was scrolling on TikTok, I saw someone start making a blanket off of a pattern they found on Etsy. It was a bookshelf blanket with all sorts of trinkets on it, and I absolutely fell in love with it. As an avid reader, this is the perfect blanket for me, and I wanted to challenge myself to try it out.
Once I bought the pattern, I went to Michaels to get some yarn. I wanted to make it in my favorite colors, so I bought a dark red and off-white yarn to complement a dusty pink that I had from a previous project. After I got all my supplies, I started using the reference material provided in the pattern to learn how to start and use a mosaic crochet pattern. It is a little bit different than what I am used to, but once I learned what to do, it became extremely easy. I haven’t taken a ton of progress photos, but I do have a few that I can share!
The original pattern only planned for a total of 6 shelves, but I don’t think it’s gonna be long enough for how I want it. I’m planning on doing 8 or 9 shelves instead so it can be super long. One thing I really like about this blanket pattern is that you can customize the shelves to be however you want. It’s kind of hard to explain the way the pattern works, but the easiest way is that it is broken down into sections, meaning you can put the different book configurations together to make it more unique. The way I made my blanket can be completely different from how someone else chose to do it, which makes this project even more fun.
The pattern itself is also super easy to pick up and understand quickly. You really only need to know 3 different types of crochet stitches to create this blanket: the single stitch, double stitch, and slip stitch. If you know how to do those, you can definitely make this blanket yourself! Before I sign off for this week, I also wanted to share the final result of my pastel drawing that I talked about in my last few posts. I was a little worried that it wouldn’t turn out how I pictured, but after it was finished, I absolutely loved how it came out. I wouldn’t change a single thing!
