Student Spotlight: Genevieve Kirby

Welcome back! This week we have Genevieve Kirby who is currently working on obtaining her masters degree in Art Education. Genevieve’s main inspiration is Joni Mitchell and she enjoys working in 3D.

Meet Genevieve

Name:  Genevieve Kirby, Class of 2019IMG_3805

Major: MA Art Education

I am majoring in Art because: I have always been interested in anything visual. As a child I spent most of my time drawing and continued to do so throughout my entire life.  My hope now is to take my passion about the arts and share them with the future students I will educate.

The kinds of things that inspire me are: old movies, being outdoors, music, and books. Currently I have been on a Kurt Vonnegut reading spree, and those books have been influencing my artwork as well as anything involving Joni Mitchell, she is my biggest influence.

My favorite class so far was: 3D Design with Dennis Corrigan. This class has taught me that it is possible to create some fantastic pieces while being goofy with my peers. This class is very loose and welcoming to all sorts of antics. Most of the time in this class is filled with such high energy and fun that I end up leaving exhausted, but in a good and happy way.

When I’m not in class: I am most likely working or napping.

The coolest thing I’ve done so far was:  Travel to New Orleans over spring break. I had the pleasure of spending a day in City Park’s sculpture garden where I got to witness some of Claes Oldenberg’s pieces. I also spent a lot of time listening to jazz music and wandering the artist market, speaking with local artists and gaining insight on what the art scene in NOLA means to them.

When I graduate: I hope to become an elementary school art teacher!

I’d recommend the Art program at Marywood because: The staff and students are some of the friendliest and hardworking people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing and working with. The professors really care about their students and want them to succeed while also being realistic with them in their goals.

What do you like the most about the graduate program at Marywood? I like the personal feel of the program. Each class is fitted to the individual student’s needs. I also like how independently I can work while also being able to directly contact my professors for feedback whenever I desire. I would most certainly recommend the masters program here at Marywood to anyone who desires to further their education.
