Student Spotlight: Jillian Carroll

Jillian Carroll is a Sophomore Art Therapy student here at Marywood University! [EDITOR’S NOTE: She’s also one of the blog’s current bloggers!] I have known Jill for almost my whole time here at Marywood, I love her artistic style. I decided to interview her because I love her art! Let’s get to know Jill!

Name: Jillian Carroll

Year of Graduation: Class of 2024

Major: Art Therapy

Minor(s): N/A

I am majoring in Art because… art has always been my passion. I grew up in a family of artists and always had the unwavering support of my parents to create anything and everything. I’ve always used art as a form of expression, so when I found Art Therapy, it felt perfect.

The kinds of things that inspire me are… a number of things. My biggest inspiration has always been my family and friends. I also tend to look towards nature for my pieces because I love the symbolism of connection, growth, and roots. My favorite source for inspiration is Instagram, because I have found so many interesting artists that I love, such as Polina Bright and Tomasz Mrozkiewicz. I also love Van Gogh and Matisse because of their use of color and how expressive they are, which is something I try to emulate.

My favorite art class so far was… probably my Figure Drawing class during Art Foundation Year. I’ve taken a figure drawing class before, but I’ve found that I’ve been learning a lot more and improving with every class. I also developed great relationships with my friends in the class and with our professor.

When I am not in class… I’m usually with my friends, whether it’s in the library, our room, or out on spontaneous shopping trips. I liked to spend my time reading, catching up on TV shows, and coming up with new ideas for my art.

The coolest thing I have done at Marywood so far was… I went to the Marywood Night at Electric City Axe Throwing, and it was so much fun! I love that Marywood sponsors free events at nearby places because it gives us the opportunity to try something we might not have ever thought to try!

When I graduate… I’m not entirely sure what I want to do yet. Art Therapy has so many paths, and each is interesting in its own right. What I really want to do is simply give people the skill of self expression through artistic means.

I would recommend the Art program at Marywood because… It is so intimate that it allows you to build great relationships with all of your professors. Each member of the faculty truly cares about seeing you accomplish your goals and become your best self. With studio classes being so small, you’ll find amazing friends that will last a lifetime.

“it is so intimate…”

What excites me most about Art is… the unlimited possibilities. I love how art can be tailored to each individual person, and how one piece can have thousands of interpretations. Art is truly timeless, and the idea that my work could be considered this way is so exciting to me.

Who is your favorite artist and why? How do they influence your work? My favorite artist is Van Gogh because of the way he felt about art. He was so passionate about every color choice and brushstroke. I love the notion of art being important beyond the criticism of others. My art can truly be for me, which is what I want to instill in my future clients.

Thank you guys for reading! I loved interviewing Jillian and I hope you liked getting to know her too! Stay tuned for our next student spotlight blog coming out in two weeks! Till next time!
