Welcome back to another weekly Student Spotlight! This week features an artist who I respect not just because we have the same major, but who she is as an artist. You may see this photographer around campus taking photos for events, taking headshots, or discovering new compositions to add to her extensive portfolio. She goes by jr._photography6 on Instagram, but in real life her name is…
Julie Potter
Major: Photography
Minor: N/A
Graduation Year: 2025
Clubs: Shutterbugs Photography Club, The Wood Word, Zeta Omicron Kappa Pi Art Honor Society, Society for Collegiate Journalists, Crochet and Knitting Club

I am majoring in Art because…
I have always had a strong love of art and particularly photography. I loved painting and drawing as a child, as well as various forms of crafts and woodworking. Photography was always my way of documenting what was around me, and eventually became my largest artistic outlet and my chosen career field.
The kinds of things that inspire me are…
people. They are typically my biggest inspiration and subject in my work. Documenting moments between people, things that make them them, etc are some of my favorite things to capture and is why I love portraiture.

My favorite art class so far was…
my Color Photography class with Prof. Sue Jenkins that I took last spring. I learned so much as a photographer especially about color, but also about getting out of my comfort zone when shooting.
When I am not in class…
I am usually out with friends or covering an event for The Wood Word, Marywood’s online news paper.
The coolest thing I have done at Marywood so far was…
probably my work as the photography editor of The Wood Word and how our photo viewership has grown over the past two years.

When I graduate…
I hope to work as a wedding photographer and hopefully have time to be a part time photojournalist on the side. I’m currently taking a photojournalism course with the award winning photojournalist and Marywood art alum, Aimee Dilger of https://www.focusjournalism.com/.
I would recommend the Art program at Marywood because…
the professors are so supportive and are deeply invested in helping you grow into the best artist you can be. Not only do they support you but they push you to be better.
What excites me most about Art is…
it gives me the opportunity to express myself beyond words and provide others with the same opportunity.

The artist that would best describe my art would be…
Vivian Maier, as I take great inspiration from her work and especially her mirror self portraits.

It’s so fascinating to see what a person can do with photography and their own perspectives. Julie takes her own inspirations and creates a composition that pairs with her photographic style! There are so many different cool color palettes, compositions, and subject matters in her works. I hope you all enjoyed this artist and her work this week. Who inspires you to create? Au revoir! ~Conchita
