Student Spotlight: Kate Bateman

Hi hi! This weeks featured student spotlight is my friend, Sophomore Kate Bateman! Kate is both an Art Education and Family Consumer Science major. She has a wide range of interests, and is very successful in all areas of art. Kate’s work is very personal and expresses her so well. I personally love seeing what she creates and am so glad she is sharing it with Where Creativity Works this week!

MEET KATE:

self, portrait, student, digital

Name: Cathleen Bateman, Class of 2019

Major(s): Art Education & Family and Consumer Sciences

I am majoring in Art because I want to inspire students to find what they are passionate about and develop themselves in that area. I had amazing influences in high school who showed me how great it is when a teacher pushes you and inspires you to create your best work, and that is something I would like to help my future students achieve. I love creating work and hope to express my work and love for art through teaching.

The kinds of things that inspire me are any form of printmaking or nature, almost all of my pieces have a natural feel and are used to share an emotion or story. I love finding new ideas and looking at other artists’ approaches to make beautiful pieces.

My favorite class so far was painting, I really enjoy using oil paints and the qualities you can achieve by layering and mixing colors.

When I’m not in class I am outside doing something active, watching The Office, sewing, or doing some other craft.

The coolest thing I’ve done so far was last semester I ran a service event for underprivileged kids in the area called College Athlete for a Day. We got all the sports teams to teach their sport to the kids, we had over 50 volunteers and 30 kids!

When I graduate I would like to teach high school, going part time in the art field and the other half in a Family and Consumer Science classroom.

I’d recommend the Art program at Marywood because You can really begin to make your work your own. You are able to see many other creative people around you and gain inspiration and input. If art is your passion never let anyone stand in the way of that and never stop working to become a better artist.

SOME OF KATES WORK:

Kate is the perfect example as to how you can work in all your interests at Marywood. She integrates her favorite techniques and ideas in to projects and really makes them her own. Her art shares a lot about her as a person and is visually beautiful. Thank you Kate for sharing your work with us!

Until next week!
