Student Spotlight: MaryKate Boyle

This is MaryKate!

MaryKate is the sweetest soul. Her art style, fashion style and friendly personality make you gravitate towards her. I knew when I joined this blog that I wanted to interview MaryKate. Continue reading to learn more about her!

Name: MaryKate Boyle

Major: Graphic Design

Graduation Year: 2024

I am majoring in Art because…

Ever since I was little I knew I wanted to be able to create without limits. Majoring in art allows me to heighten my creative efforts in and out of the classroom, as well as collaborate with other artists and businesses across different mediums.

The kinds of things that inspire me are…

Nature truly inspires me daily. I’m a big believer in grounding and meditating and I take a lot of inspiration from the different sounds and experiences that I get from being outside. I also feel inspired by my peers. When I see someone who is passionate about what they create it creates a ripple effect within me and fuels my creativity.

My favorite art class so far was…

Advanced Typography with Chris Medley.

When I am not in class…

I’m working out at The Salt Barre either taking a pilates or yoga class. I also write and record music and love to collaborate with my friends.

The coolest thing I have done at Marywood so far was…

Win a desktop wallpaper design contest for Smashing Magazine in Sue Jenkins’ Interactive design II class. My artwork will be available to download and use as a wallpaper for the month of April.

When I graduate…

I’d like to live in Miami and travel as much as possible. I’d also like to work for myself in the future doing freelance graphic design/web design work as well as get certified to instruct pilates and yoga classes.

I would recommend the Art program at Marywood because…

The professors are great and really push you to become the best version of yourself in class and out in the real world. The Art program at Marywood has allowed me to take many different classes that are outside of my major like sculpture and drawing, which is a really nice break from doing strictly digital graphic design.

What excites me most about Art is…

I love that art can transcend time. I also love that there are an unlimited number of interpretations of art. Everyone sees or hears roughly the same thing, but each of us has our own opinion of it. Our experiences throughout life help shape our opinions of art. No two people experience the exact same thing, so our interpretations are bound to vary.

Advice I would give someone who is interested in going to school for Art is…

•Stay true to yourself and be confident in your skills.

•Don’t stress and take your time.

•Experiment with different mediums while you are in school, try everything. You will never have the chance to have all those materials again. This is where you can find out what you really love, and maybe a little bit of what you are good at (and what you’re not).

•Create relationships with likeminded people and network.

•Be passionate about what you create and be proud of it!

Thank you for reading! I hope you enjoyed MaryKate’s beautiful work. I truly enjoyed her pieces and getting to know her more! Check back in two weeks for a new Student Spotlight ☺️!
