Student Spotlight: Michael Kelley

Meet Michael!

Name: Michael Kelley

Year Graduating: Class of 2022

Major: Digital Media and Broadcast Journalism

Minor: Photography

I am majoring in Art because I have always been a creative person growing up. I was that person would constantly draw in notebooks in school and do different art projects for classes. In high school, I was enrolled in a technical school to learn more about digital media. I feel like with creating art, it allows you to put something out into the world that provides true individual expression. To me, art was always about conveying a statement that either holds an individual or broader meaning. I would like to be able to put my meaning into the world through what I create to share that with the world around me.

The kinds of things that inspire me are some of my favorite photographers that I not only follow online but also some major artists like Andy Warhol and Keith Harring. I was always inspired by Harring growing up, because he came from my hometown. I was inspired by using his platform to make a statement on issues that matters to him.

My favorite class so far was Basic Photography I. Before taking the class, I was on a bit of an art block, when it came to taking pictures I was feeling uninterested. But, the projects during the course helped to push me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to create amazing photographs throughout the course. The professor also gave a lot of advice about the industry which is something you don’t see often. I’m looking forward to working with the different professors throughout my major and minor.

When I’m not in class usually I’m with friends in the library hanging out. Sometimes when I’m off campus I enjoy going to Adezzo in Scranton and walking around the Steamtown area with friends. I also regularly go to Dickson City and go to Viewmont Mall and Gallery of Sound as well.

The coolest thing I’ve done so far at Marywood was running for homecoming court my freshman year. I wanted to try something that was out of my comfort zone and be able to put myself out there. I won that year which surprised me because I never really saw myself as being able to achieve something like that. I also would like to say joining Phi Mu Delta was another amazing thing that happened to me, because I managed to gain another chosen family from people that are not just out of my department, but who also come from different backgrounds in different parts of the world.

When I graduate I want to be able to start off working in broadcast journalism working for different news stations as a producer, director, and technical director. I would also like to see myself build my photography business on the side and manage to travel taking various photographs. I eventually would like to see myself working to produce different films. I would like to create documentaries about different issues I’m interested in.

I recommend the Art program at Marywood because the faculty and students are nice and offer a lot of guidance for me to bring out my best. They also provide a lot of resources for me to be able to create stuff in my own free time when I want to.

The best spot to be on campus is the atrium because I always enjoy going down there with a couple of friends and grabbing food between classes.
