Hello there! My name is Jordan Slater and I am your new blogger for the Student Spotlight. This week we have Nicole Gillette. Nicole is a second semester freshman who is enjoying her time at Marywood and looking forward to gaining experience and knowledge to help her obtain a job in the art field someday.

Meet Nicole:nichole

Name: Nicole Gillette, Class of 2020

Major: Graphic Design

I am majoring in Art because I have always had an interest in art and music. Both give excitement in my life. As I got older I developed my skills in art and decided I wanted to pursue one of my passions in college and hope to obtain a job that I love in art.

The kinds of things that inspire me are my family, friends, music and nature. My family and friends are very supportive and help me continue to work even when I’ve given up. When I get frustrated over a project, or just need a little inspiration to continue an art piece, I just look outside to calm me down and get ideas. I also look to all different kinds of music for inspiration and to get me motivated. Whether it is classical music, classic rock, movie soundtracks, or anime theme songs, music gets me in the right set of mind to start and continue my day.

My favorite class so far is my 3D class this semester. Though I have had only a few classes, the days I have spent in that class have been so much fun. I am able to work with my hands which I enjoy and talk with my friends while being productive. I look to them for inspiration as well as advice on what I do. We are currently surrounding an egg with a toothpick design to protect the egg when we drop it. Though I’m nervous, I can’t wait to see whose egg doesn’t crack.

When I’m not in class, I’m usually hanging out and talking with friends from my previous class, or just chilling in my room. When it gets busier, I will be working on projects that need to be finished, but right now I’m just enjoying my free time.

The coolest thing I’ve done so far in terms of art projects was a tabloid project in my graphics class. Our goal was to make a pamphlet about a certain subject. Because of my passion for tea, I chose tea as the subject of “The Monthly Brew” I put together some original artwork and articles and brought my passions of tea and art together. I was able to use everything I learned in computer graphics for the semester. It was a lot of fun working in and learning the program InDesign.

When I graduate I hope to find a job and continue doing what I love in the art field.

I’d recommend the Art program at Marywood because there is so much experience you can gain even just from a semester. When I visited Marywood for the first time, I stepped inside the Insalaco art building. Looking through all the rooms and seeing the studios was just amazing. At that moment I not only wanted to go to Marywood, but also be in the Art department. Since that day, the Art department teachers have helped me out so much. Whenever I have a question about anything, the teachers and my advisor, Sue Jenkins, were able to either give me the right answer or point me in the right direction whether it was a question about the Art department or art field, a new program we were learning, or even how to make my projects better. In only a semester, I have learned so much and have been guided so that one day when I graduate I will have the connections and experience to obtain a job in the art field. The Art program is really amazing and will set you on the right path with small classes and friendly teachers, where you aren’t just a number, but a friend to professionals in the art field.
