Ryan Mathews was one of the first people I met at Marywood since we are both graphic design majors. He is always able to give me an opinion and we help each other out in class! I truly enjoy how he puts himself into his work.
Name: Ryan Mathews
Major: Graphic Design
Year: Class of 2022
I am majoring in Art because I was interested with art as a child, but I then fell in love with it when started my senior year of high school. When I was talking to my art teacher, she thought I had a lot of potential going to college as an art major, and I cannot thank her enough for putting pressure on me during class to better myself in this field.
The kinds of things that inspire me are when I am walking around campus and get a thought of something. I immediately go “I just got a good idea!” And then I would go to my dorm and get to work in my notepad. Food products became an inspiration recently because I really am fascinated on the thought of food with human features.
My favorite class so far was my character design class with Professor Corrigan, which I am taking currently. In this class, we have been coming up with ideas for made up characters, and I am participating in this class to create my food characters. Recently, Professor Corrigan has helped me with my one series titled, “The Good Gone Rogue”, which is portraying well known childhood icons if they turned bad.
When I’m not in class I am hanging out with my friends, randomly doodling in my many sketchbooks, or I am in the weight-room at the school gym.
The coolest thing I’ve done so far at Marywood was become an admissions ambassador and an admissions tour guide. This has helped me strengthen my speaking skills, but over anything else, has given me the opportunity to express my love for Marywood to all of the prospective high school students I give college tours to.
When I graduate I would hopefully strive to become a licensed illustrator and work in the illustration business, or I would like to become a production animator that works with movie companies and with teams that produces movie posters.
I’d recommend the Art program at Marywood because students get to learn the base principles coming into their freshman year of college, and once they get past their foundation year, they get to be more hands on when it comes to their major. There are many ways to showcase their artwork with numerous art gallery opportunities and showings on campus/off campus. There are also many ways to go experience and view art, such as bus trips to museums and gallery shows, and much more.
The best spot to be on campus is anywhere on campus. Even though it is a small campus, there is so much to go to. The Memorial Garden in the front of campus is a commonly used place to relax during the day and is used for meditation purposes, which I really enjoy because I like to sit and just listen to nature. Another place that is well liked is the Learning Commons, which is a place to have grab and go food, to meet up with friends, and works as a place to study. Whenever I am not in class, I personally am in that building or sitting in the garden right in front of the learning commons.
That’s all for this week! Thank you Ryan for your great recommendations about the campus and for sharing your art with us! See y’all next week!
