Hey all, welcome back! This week our spotlight shines on Sam. Sam is a graphic design major who also loves to cook!
Meet Sam
Name: Sam Costa, Class of 2018
Major: Graphic Design
I am majoring in Art because… Art has always been a big part of my life, so naturally I wanted to find a way to make a career out of my creativity.
The kinds of things that inspire me are… Other creative people inspire me a lot, regardless of their preferred medium or style, I just love being around people that want to create. Seeing other people make new work helps give me that little push I need to turn my ideas into reality.
My favorite class so far was… Packaging Design. The class makes you think about design in a completely new way. You have to turn two-dimensional designs into three-dimensional products, which can be extremely complex, but it’s so worth it when you can hold the final product in your hands and see the concept come to life.
When I’m not in class… I’m probably still doing work for classes, hanging out with my friends, or cooking.
The coolest thing I’ve done so far was… Screen printing! It’s a tricky process to get the hang of, but the finished products are always worth the work. The small mistakes that come from creating something by hand give the works a lot of character, which is something you don’t always get to experience when working digitally.
When I graduate… I plan on moving back home to Long Island, and hopefully getting a job in Manhattan.
I’d recommend the Art program at Marywood because… The classes are very hands-on and small enough that you can get to know your professors and classmates really well. Everyone is extremely encouraging and supportive of each other, and it’s nice to have a sense of community and family at school. It’s a really positive environment to be able to explore and develop your work.

Thank you Sam for being a part of Student Spotlight this week! It is always amazing to see where others pull their inspiration from. Make sure you check out more of Sam’s work at the 2018 Senior Show Exhibition on April 7th. We’ll see you next time and until then, water your plants, take a drive and as always stay inspired.
