Surrealist Photography

Hi everyone! This week I wanted to talk about a contemporary artist who creates surrealist photography. His name is Erik Johansson. He comes from Sweden, but is currently in Prague in the Czech Republic. His work is insanely intriguing, mainly because of the surrealist quality that makes the photographs unrealistic and impossible; but the photographs have some realistic qualities; therefore, it’s a cool mixer of real and non real playing a trick on the mind.

Johansson presents some interesting photographs that he clearly put a lot of work into. For me, these photographs remind me of the movie Dr. Seuss The Cat and the Hat and the book Alice in Wonderland. So it reminds me of a fantasy world. It also reminds me of a technique called trompe l’oeil, which means deceiving/tricking the eye. These are often done in paintings, but Johansson does an amazing job of tricking the eye into perceiving what is not real in these photographs.
