Recently for my ART-320 Photojournalism class, I have been taking a lot of sports photography for our assignments, specifically to shoot sports action and sports feature. I typically don’t take sports photography photos because I am not that interested in sports, but it got me out of my comfort zone.
Sports Action
For these photos I used a really high shutter speed to stop the motion. It was a little tricky getting used to the fast motion of the players but I eventually got the hang of it

For this photo I used the panning method. This is when you set a slow shutter speed and follow the person running to create a motion blur. My professor, Aimee Dilger, asked the photo majors to try this trick to challenge ourselves.
Sports Feature
For this assignment we had to take a sports feature. In this assignment we had to capture a sporting event without showing the action of the players. The focus would mainly be the crowd cheering or the team players hyping each other up.

I learned a lot from these assignments and they helped me get out of my comfort zone. Even though I am still not a fan of sports photography, I am not opposed to it anymore.
If you had to take sports photography photos, which sport would you choose?
