Album covers are a unique art form, they typically have weird designs to grab the attention of someone who is looking through music. The design on an album cover doesn’t always have to relate to the music actually in the album. Creating our own album cover happens to be our newest project in illustration!
To begin this project our professor had shown us example albums covers with amazing illustrations. Each one a different take on how an illustrator can approach making a cover. We looked at a lot of rock bands, heavy metal, electronic, punk and other older bands. One album cover in particular stands out as one of the most iconic in music history is for Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon.” Because of how popular the music in that album became the cover the artist did became an icon.
There were no limitations for us on making our own album cover except for the dimensions of the project, which had to be 6″ x 6″ or 12″ x 12″. Medium was free range, the band and album could be real or fictional, and of course how it was designed was up to us. I chose the band Coldplay for this project and their album “Mylo Xloto.” I picked this band not only because it is my favorite band but I thought that I could make a really mellow and upbeat cover to go along with the type of music in this specific album. I started out with my composition drawn up and then I traced over that with a black marker. Then I used eye catching colors that were bright and also calming like soft pinks, purples, yellows, and blues.
Absolutely love this post – really original and inspiring! Not only did you mention two of my favourite albums of all time, but the diversity which you’ve included here means this post/blog is for anyone and everyone! Love this x
Thank you so much for the comment! I’m glad you were able to relate to my post!!
