Illustrator Study: Hayao Miyazaki

Hello everyone! I am going to talk about another illustrator this week and his name is Hayao Miyazaki. He created what is known today as Studio Ghibli, one of the most popular animation studios of all time.

About Miyazaki

Hayao was born in Tokyo, Japan on January 5, 1941. He was interested in becoming a manga artist at an early age. He made a discovery that he couldn’t really draw people very well so instead he drew battleships, planes and tanks. He took inspiration from other manga artists, but believed that copying their style was hindering his own personal style so eventually he developed his own style. Later, he graduated from Gakushuin University with degrees in political science and economics, but went on to pursue his career of becoming a manga artist. He first got employed to Toei Animation in 1963 and worked as an in-between artist on many projects. Then, he went on to make his own manga and some of them are People of the Desert, Animal Treasure Island, The Return of Hans, and many others. Years later, Miyazaki and group of three other individuals, Takahata, Tokuma, Suzuki, founded Studio Ghibli in 1985. This was an animation studio that became popular very quickly for it’s masterful storytelling and beautiful animation. Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Howl’s Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Kiki’s Delivery Service are some of the films created by this studio. Miyazaki has created some of the most beautiful stories and illustrations to ever grace the TV screen.
