Crafting lids for ceramic vessels can at first be tricky, but once practiced it becomes quite easy indeed. There are several basic ways to make a matching pot and lid and different people will teach different methods.

#’s 1,3,4,5, and 6 are more basic methods. #’s 2,7,8, and 9 use split rims and flanges to make more secure fits and trap heat inside the vessel more effectively.

This diagram shows 9 ways that the lid and vessel can interact both physically and aesthetically. something important to keep in mind when throwing these shapes is to leave a bit of extra clay at the top of your pot while on the wheel so that you both have room for error, and enough thickness to support the weight of a lid.
