New York Project

What do you think of when you think of New York? I think of apples, the subways, Broadway, the Statue of Liberty, and of course the Empire State Building.

New York is a magnificent city filled with endless energy, diverse food, and historic landmarks. The people there are boundlessly passionate with strong opinions and are always bustling to their next location.

If you spend any time in New York you will almost definitely run into a person on the streets who is trying to shove a flier in your hands or convince you to buy their new product. These are often scams and people who grow up in the city know not to take anything from them. They learn to walk straight past, ignore, and focus on getting to where you’re going. It’s the standard practice that’s preached to all New Yorkers and they are quite good at it. But do you think that you could design something that could capture one of their attentions? How would you do it? What message would you try to send?

These are the questions asked in my Illustration class this semester, and the ones that I am tackling in this project. I’ll admit I really struggled coming up with an idea for the project, I started off by trying to come up with a designed flier that would pop and draw attention. But a person can see hundreds of fliers a day, how can I make mine special enough to interrupt their train of thought—to make these driven, passionate people pause their day and take what I’m offering. That was when I had the idea to create something 3D.

Reflecting on what I think of New York, I knew I wanted to incorporate some illustrations into the piece so I had the idea to put them on the petals of a flower. I wanted to use that symbolism to send the message of reminding people that we are all a part of nature, and that we should take the time to take care of it. Then while making it I realized that if I pulled the petals together I could make them into the shape of an apple.

Overall If I were to actually make this into a handout I would like to spread a reminder to keep your environment in mind as you progress in your own fast paced life. I feel that we can often get trapped in our own little worlds and forget about the one that we actually live in. We are all a part of nature, and need to treat it with care. The idea of my handout is that if you were to take it, you would have to treat it delicately so as to not squish the work. Acting as a physical reminder of how fragile our world can be if we are not mindful of it.

Thank you for reading this post! Hi, I’m Emma. This is my first blog post for Where Creativity Works and I’m incredibly excited to continue writing for you all!
