Pastel Progress

Hey everyone! I hope you all are having a great summer and had an amazing Fourth of July weekend! Unfortunately, this week, I have another short update for you, as I haven’t had much time to do much art-wise. However, I do have a progress update on my chalk pastel drawing from my last post that I can share with you.

In my last post, I shared some progress photos and concept ideas for my latest art project. For anyone who missed it, I am doing a chalk pastel drawing of a dreamy, colorful skyscape reflected over some water. In my previous classes, I was only able to really get the outline and base for the clouds done before I ran out of time. This past week, however, I made some really good progress on the first part of the sky, and I am really happy with how it is looking so far. To see the difference, here are my last progress photo from my previous post and the most recent photo I took.

I was pretty happy with how the drawing was coming along in the first photo, but after I worked on it some more and really refined the details in the clouds, I love how it looks. While I was working on it, it didn’t feel like I was making much progress since my last progress check. However, after comparing the two, I think it definitely looks a lot better. I really wanted to focus on the clouds’ shadows and make sure they were distinguishable from one another. Sometimes, when I make pieces like this one, it is really easy to make the clouds look like one large blobby shape instead of separate from one another. That is something that I really wanted to fix from my last photo. I went back into the clouds and brought out some more values and highlights to really emphasize their definition.

I am super happy with how this drawing is coming together. Although, I am a little nervous to recreate the clouds in the reflection of the water. Obviously, it’s not going to look identical to the top half of the piece, but I want to make sure I get it close enough that it reflects properly. It looks so good already, and I’m a little scared that I’m gonna obsess over it too much and mess it up. However, I’m going to have faith in myself and not start thinking of the worst.

That’s all from me for this week. Hopefully, next time I post, I’ll have more to share with you than my pastel progress. However, I am definitely going to keep you guys updated on how it’s looking and the final results. I did see this really cool crochet blanket idea on TikTok this week, so maybe I’ll get around to starting that project next. For now, I’ve been spending my time with my family and friends and reading as many books as I can before the semester starts.

Let me know what you think about my drawing progress so far! I would love to hear your thoughts! Anyway, I hope you all have an amazing week, and I’ll see yo unext post!

Thanks for reading!

– Cecelia 🙂
