Student Spotlight: Hunter Johnson

MEET HUNTER!

Hunter Johnson is a Sophomore Illustration and Sculpture student here at Marywood University! I wanted to interview him because I love his work and his style! Let’s get to know him!

Name: Hunter Johnson

Year of Graduation: Class of 2024

Major: Illustration

Minor(s): Sculpture

I am majoring in Art because… drawing is something I have always had decent skill in. I sought out an art program specifically because I wanted to improve some more so I can have a future career in it.

The kinds of things that inspire me are… others artists, like Bob Ross, in my paintings. (https://www.bobross.com/) But mostly from Kevin Okafor, a pencil/charcoal artist that creates photo-realistic drawings. (https://kelvinokaforart.com/) They inspire me because they create realistic interpretations of landscapes and portraits, which is something I like to portray in my artwork as well.

My art favorite class so far was… 2D and color, which I took my freshman year. It stood out to me because we learned a lot about the basics of patterns, and some new shading techniques which I have used a lot in my artwork as an Illustration major since then.

When I am not in class… I’m hanging out with friends, drawing, or outside staying active, playing basketball, going for a run, or going to the gym. It helps me to relax because its a way to let my mind de-stress and just gives me something else to stay occupied with.

When I graduate from Marywood University… I hope to continue and find a career in the Art field because it is one of the significant passions I have in my life. I mainly want to focus on doing commissions for people, because I like to work on a variety of mediums so I don’t get too used to doing the same thing over and over everyday. Doing commissions will give me that variety and challenge.

I would recommend the Art program at Marywood because… the professors are very good, are very knowledgeable about things within the art field, and are always there to help students when they need it.

What excites me most about Art is… finally finishing a piece and sharing it for others to see. Art is a way for me to portray the things I enjoy in my life for others to view, hoping to give them that same feeling about it. Being able to finish a piece of art is also very rewarding to me because putting a lot of effort into an artwork always feels very satisfying.

What is your favorite art movement and why? The Symbolism art movement is one of my favorites because it was one of the first that began using realistic landscapes and forms of the human body, as that is what I like to portray in most of my artworks. There are also a lot of interesting techniques and concepts that have come from this movement.

Thank you guys for reading! I loved getting to know Hunter and hope you guys did too! Stay tuned for our next student spotlight blog coming out in two weeks! Till next time!
