Hi everyone! I hope you’re all doing well! This week, I want to revisit a project from last semester! If you’ve been keeping up with my posts, you may have seen my original post about making my jewelry lighthouse, as well as my post showing the final product. Because of some imperfections, I’ve decided to keep it for myself! I loaded it up with some of my jewelry the other day, and it’s absolutely adorable. However, there are a couple of things I would change if I were to make it again. I love the concept of this jewelry lighthouse, so I want to make it as functional as possible. Let me tell you about my ideas!

First, I would love a place to store bracelets. In the current version, the only option for storing bracelets would be around the cylindrical piece above the earring stud storage. However, in this case, the bracelet would have to be adjustable and, furthermore, pretty small, so as not to fall off. The base of the lighthouse is also completely hollow, so there is some storage in there, but it’s not easily accessible for everyday use. One idea I have to add storage for bracelets is to use metal hooks along the edge of the flat circular piece. This way, any type of bracelet could be stored. I have to see if that’s possible, but I’d love to give it a try.

Secondly, I would love to add storage for rings. As it stands now, there is a little space above the piece that holds stud earrings, which could hold a couple of rings, but that’s not an intentional aspect of the design. I would also prefer it to be a little bit easier to access than that, so I’ve brainstormed a couple of solutions. Firstly, making the very top of the lighthouse a trinket dish shape instead of a cone like shape. This way, it could hold rings as well as other pieces of jewelry that don’t fit or have a place. My only concern with this idea is that if the top doesn’t come to a point, it might not look like a lighthouse without being decorated/ glazed to look like one. So, I also considered making the top bowl shaped, but also adding a cone shaped lid. I love this idea, I just don’t know how practical it will be in the long run. The other idea I had was that one, the bracelet hooks could double as ring hooks, but two, I could add hooks anywhere on the lighthouse. I would have to experiment to see where it would look best and where different types of rings would fit, but it sounds like an idea worth giving a shot.

The last change I’ve considered is making the lighthouse’s proportions more realistic. Honestly, the only thing I would change about this one is making the base taller. Combining the need for storage with the need for a taller base, I’ve also thought about making the lighthouse’s base from individual stacking containers. I don’t know how practical it would be, but it would definitely increase storage without cluttering the lighthouse’s surface. I would love to play around with hinges/ drawers as well, but that might be getting a bit ahead of myself. Theres many ways to go about it all!!

If you couldn’t tell, I have a lot of ideas to improve my original design. I’m so excited to get back into the studio and experiment. For now, I’m going to sketch out the ideas I’ve just rambled about and brainstorm even more. If you’re into this concept, I’d love to hear your ideas for improvements. Any thoughts are appreciated!
