Student Spotlight: Leah Crawley

Hello readers! I am back once again to introduce you all to another amazing artist!

She makes wonderful paintings and pencil drawings and uses paintings to convey her emotions similar to how music describes our feelings.

So let me introduce you all to…

Leah Crawley!

A freshman Illustration major, Leah takes in the world around her and expresses herself!

Major: Illustration

Graduation Year: 2027

I am majoring in Art because…

I am majoring in Illustration because I can’t imagine anything I’d rather do for a living than create art. Art, in any form, makes the world interesting and allows people to feel myriad emotions, which is the most powerful thing about it. Sharpening my skills with a formal education will allow me to make a living while still doing what makes me happy.

The kinds of things that inspire me are…

Music really inspires me to be creative, as well as nature and other visual artists. I like seeing what my peers come up with – it gives me motivation to work on an artwork.

My favorite art class so far was…

My favorite art class so far was basic drawing; before I started at Marywood my mentor had me do six fully realized still-life drawings with colored pencils (and many before that for practice), and taking this class made me really grateful to her that she gave me a leg-up on the assignments. I also really enjoy drawing people, so the self-portrait at the end was fun for me.

When I am not in class…

When I am not in class, the artistic things that I do are drawing with Procreate on my iPad and keeping a personal sketchbook. Otherwise, I read a lot of books and go to concerts with my friends.

The coolest thing I have done at Marywood so far was…

The coolest things I have done at Marywood so far were learning to oil paint and getting a one-on-one tour of the Mahady Gallery. I had never oil painted before I started the class I am in now, Painting 1. I only used acrylic, so I enjoy learning a new medium. I also got to see the back room of the Mahady gallery when I requested a tour from Ryan Ward, and he was really good at explaining everything.

When I graduate…

When I graduate I hope I absorb all I need to know to be a successful artist and person in the world. I’m not quite sure yet what my plan is for my future, but I have confidence that Marywood will have set me up for it when I get to that point.

I would recommend the Art program at Marywood because…

I would recommend the Art program at Marywood because it is very thorough and offers a lot; whether you want to be a painter, illustrator, art therapist, graphic designer, etc, Marywood has a place for you to thrive.

What excites me most about Art is…

What excites me most about Art is that it’s a form of expression that can be difficult to describe in any other way. Sometimes I’ll be listening to music, and a lyric will be worded in a way that I never thought to say myself, but it describes exactly how I feel. It’s similar to visual art – sometimes a painting can make you feel seen, without having to say anything. Art means different things from person to person, and that’s what is beautiful about it.

Take a look at Leah’s beautiful artwork!

It’s beautiful how Leah takes in her surroundings and creates pieces that express even the most difficult of emotions. So when words fail, your art can speak for you!

Thank you for reading this week’s post! I hope you all have a wonderful February!

Sephora, out! <3
